The reconstruction of a pipeline and extension of existing compressor stations will allow to transit gas to Iran via the territory of Azerbaijan, State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) President Rovnag Adullayev said on March 17.

"Iran made a request to increase gas supplies to northern regions of the country at world prices. Presently we review the issue. We need to reconstruct the pipeline in Astara direction, as well as to extend compressor stations. This allows us to deliver gas to Iran for the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) of Azerbaijan," Abdullayev added.
Now, Azerbaijan implements gas supplies to Iran and then gas is delivered to NAR.
The daily gas supplies to NAR is 1 million cubic metre.
Iran needs more gas and the Russian gas monopolist Gazprom will make a proposal to carry out gas supplies to Iran's northern regions. "Gazprom review the issue and this is a possible commercial issue. [..] We, as a transit country, can deliver gas to Iran," Abdullayev said.
Range of conditions laid out to Gazprom, as it will not re-export gas to Armenia. "We will monitor the process seriously," SOCAR president said.
A transit agreement is needed to implement the project.
his week Russian Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko and Iranian Petroleum Minister Gholamhossein Nozari inked a memorandum on mutual understanding in the oil and gas spheres. This will allow Gazprom to deliver gas to Iran's northern regions in exchange for hydrocarbon supplies from the south of Iran to Persian gulf countries.
According to Shmatko, Gazprom will deliver Turkmen gas to the North Iran in exchange for hydrocarbon supplies from Iran's south to Persian gulf countries. Currently, several versions of deliveries are being reviewed.
Gazprom Gas Monopoly Department head Stanislav Tsigankov said that there was an energy shortage and lack of transport infrastructure in the North Iran to transport hydrocarbons from the south of the country. .
There are several versions to deliver gas to the North Iran. These are the Turkmen gas pipeline and gas pipeline from Azerbaijan. This is a possible route. We are ready to deliver hydrocarbons in exchange for supplies from country's south regions," Tsigankov said.
