Azerbaijan to invest $240 million in air transportation in 2008

1.6 million passengers were transported by Azerbaijan’s air transportation system and the passenger turnover made 1.02 billion passengers/kilometer in 2007.

Passenger transportation rose 16.7% and passenger turnover by air increased by 20% in the country.

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Transport said last year two ATR aircrafts were bought and a hotel and a car park were constructed near the Heydar Aliyev Airport to provide higher-quality services to passengers.

Construction works were also initiated in the airports of Zagatala and Lenkeran and are to be finished in May and September, 2008, respectively.

There is a plan to buy 4 ATR aircrafts, to improve fleet and technical capacity of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport and Zabrat Airport, build canteen for passengers and crewmembers, construct runways and a perron and other infrastructure in Zabrat Airport in 2008.

The activities are expected to take a total of 200 million AZN in investment ($240 million).
