Azerbaijan puts forward its candidacy to UNESCO committee

Seventh session of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions is ongoing at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

This session provides the Parties as well as observers with a space to share information on the impact of the Convention in their countries.

The chairing country of the conference (Burkina Faso), four deputy chairmen (Germany, Serbia, El Salvador, Palestine) and a rapporteur (Cambodia) were elected at the opening of the session.

Speaking at the general debate on the application of the convention, head of the Azerbaijani delegation, deputy minister of culture Sevda Mammadaliyeva touched upon the role of UNESCO in promoting world peace, and the successful work which Azerbaijan has done in the sphere of diversity of cultural self-expression of the country, which is the center of multiculturalism.

Mammadaliyeva also spoke about the projects in the field of education, intercultural dialogue, science and innovations that were implemented by the Azerbaijan/UNESCO Trust Fund in the African continent within the framework of cooperation agreement which Azerbaijan and UNSECO signed in 2013.

Head of the delegation also exchanged views on the protection of cultural heritage with an Italian expert Pietro Laureano.

At the end of the session, which will continue until June 7, the election will be held for the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2019-2023 Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

Azerbaijan has put forward its candidacy to the committee from the Eastern European Group.

The seventh session of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions is held to examine the state of implementation of the 2005 Convention and discusses how this contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

It takes important decisions on the future activities of the Intergovernmental Committee for the 2020-2021 period.
