A clash occurred between students of Persian and Azerbaijani origins at the campus of the local technical university in Urmia, Iran on Sunday. Nine people were hospitalized with injuries as a result. The clash stopped after the police interfered. But later the students resumed fighting at the dormitory.  

Since then the police exercised control over the streets of the city and the university, the Party for Independence of South Azerbaijan said. Some university teachers have begun to conduct lessons in Azerbaijani language in protest to actions of the Persian nationalists.
