Azerbaijani team was taking part in a World Greco-Roman Championship in Minsk. According to Azerisport, the Azeri team was in the same group with Russia, Armenia, Bulgaria, and Kazakhstan. The other group had Turkey, Cuba, Iran, Korea and Belarus. The Azerbaijani team was headcoached by a former champion, Farid Mansurov.

The winners of the groups will meet in the finals, and the teams taking 2nd places in their groups will fight for bronze medals.

In their second match, Azerbaijan national Greco-roman wrestling team held a flawless victory over their Armenian counterparts, defeating them with a perfect 7-0 score of the World Cup, in Minsk (Belarus). In their first match, Azerbaijani team lost to the Russians with a score of 3-4.

Azerbaijani team was represented at the tournament by Eldaniz Azizli (55 kg), Rovshan Bayramov (55 kg), Hasan Aliyev (60 kg), Orkhan Pashayev (60 kg), Vitaly Rahimov (66 kg), Rustam Aliyev (66 kg), Rafig Huseynov (74 kg), Saman Tahmasibi (84 kg), Shalva Gadabadze (96 kg), Zaur Mehraliyev (120 kg), and Anton Botev (120 kg).

Azeri team then beat the Bulgarian team with a score of 6:1, and also defeated Kazakhstan (4:3). This way, Azerbaijani team became the 2nd in the A-group, following Russia. Thus, the Azerbaijani team has a chance to battle for the bronze medals in the tournament finals.
