The successful holding of Formula 1 races in Azerbaijan noticeably increased the interest of local and foreign marshals, said Chingiz Mehdiyev, head of the Baku Marshals Club of the Baku City Circuit Operations Company, Trend reports.

Motorsport marshals contribute to enjoyable, efficient, and safer motor racing. They are responsible for the safety of competitors and are stationed at various points of danger around race tracks to assist them in case of any collisions, accidents or track problems.

Marshals are also known as course workers, corner workers, corner crews, turn marshals, corner marshals, track safety workers, or other equivalents around the world. Motorsport marshals can be either paid or volunteer workers depending on the organization they work for.

Mehdiyev noted that more and more people are willing to become marshals every year.

"If last year there were 1,603 people wanting to become marshals, this year their number is 2,445. This is very pleasing, and we are proud of it,” he said.

A meeting of marshals participating in the activities of the Baku City Circuit Operations Company was held on February 16. Various issues were discussed during the meeting, such as the results of the year, tasks completed in accordance with the trainings which were begun in early February for about 1,300 marshals, the changes that occurred in the regulations for the Formula 1 season for 2019, as well as the issues of improving the overall conduction of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Azerbaijan.

The event was attended by 100 leading marshals.

In 2016 these trainings were conducted by foreign marshals, while they have been led by local marshals since 2017.

The Formula 1 races will be held in Baku on April 26-28 this year.
