National team won four medals at the World Junior Wrestling Championships ended in Trnava, Slovakia on September 23.

Azerbaijani freestyle wrestlers scored 91 points and took fourth place. The national team, which attended championship with 10 wrestlers, grabs four medals under the leadership of senior coach Saypulla Absaidov and coach Rovshan Hajiyev.  

Hajimurad Hajiyev (70 kg) captured gold medal, Abubakr Abakarov (74 kg) won silver, and Orkhan Abasov (79 kg) and Askhab Hamzatov (92 kg) claimed bronze medals.

Hajimurad stopped Russia from winning next gold medal, passing Razambek Zhamalov, 4-3 in the 70kg finals. Hajiyev trailed 3-0 and scored four unanswered points to win his first junior world gold medal.

Russia held first place with 182 points, the U.S.ranks second with 115 points, and Iran took third place with 98 points.

Wrestling remains the most popular sport in the country and is overseen by the National Wrestling Federation, which was established in 1993.

The Rio Games opened a new page in wrestling for Azerbaijan. The country became one of only two nations ever to increase the number of medals achieved in five consecutive Games.

Azerbaijan left Rio de Janeiro with a total of 18 medals. Nine of these medals were distributed to the Azerbaijani team in wrestling.
