Azerbaijani judo fighter Orkhan Safarov has claimed silver medal at the World Championship in Budapest, Hungary after losing to Japanese Naohisa Takato in the final bout.

He secured the medal in the men's 60kg weight category.

The 26-year-old judoka also defeated Kazakh world and Asia champion, silver medalist of the Rio 2016 Olympics, Yeldos Smetov in the 1/4 finals.

The World Judo Championship began on August 28 in Hungary’s capital Budapest.

The tournament brought together 782 fighters from 39 countries.

National team includes 17 judo fighters (9 men and 8 women).

The men's squad included Orkhan Safarov (60 kg), Nijat Shilkhaizade (66 kg), Rustam Orujov, Hidayat Heyderov (73 kg), Mammadali Mehdiyev, Tural Safguliyev (90 kg), Elhan Mammadov, Elmar Gasimov (100 kg) and Ushanqi Kokauri (over 100 kg).

Azerbaijan's female team includes Bazarraqca Erdenebat (48 kg)Nazaket Azizova, Buyanxishiq Purevsuren (52 kg), Ichinhorlo Munkhtsedev (57kg), Sakina Zakirova (57kg), Gulzadaf Karimova (63kg), Irina Kindzerska (over 78 kg), Leyla Aliyeva (48kg).
