Azerbaijani freestyle wrestlers competed at the annual Ali Aliyev Memorial International wrestling tournament held in the Dagestani city of Kaspiysk on July 7-8.

The national squad included 16 wrestlers.

The national fighters won six medals on the first day, while they won two more medals on the second day of the tournament.

Alexander Gostiyev (86 kg) lost in the final, and Galib Aliyev (61 kg) became the third, azerisport.com.

Thus, Azerbaijani team brought home a clutch of eight medals, including two gold and two silver as well as four bronze.

Wrestling remains the most popular sport in the county and is overseen by the National Wrestling Federation, which was established in 1993.

The Rio Games opened a new page in wrestling for Azerbaijan. The country became one of only two nations ever to increase the number of medals achieved in five consecutive Games.
