Manchester United's Wayne Rooney has joined the exclusive 200 club, scoring twice as the Red Devils opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with an encouraging win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Rooney put United ahead midway through the first half with a first-time effort from Patrice Evra's cross.

Simon Rolfes sent the ball home for Leverkusen early in the second-half. However just before the hour Van Persie put United back in front from Antonio Valencia's cutback.

The result was beyond doubt in the 70th minute when a David De Gea long ball bamboozled the Leverkusen defence, and Rooney lifted his shot over Leno having been put through one-on-one.

The goal saw Rooney become just the fourth man to score 200 goals for United with the former Everton man joining Sir Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law and Jack Rowley in an elite club.

Valencia scored an excellent fourth from the right, after the substitute Ashley Young, and then Rooney had worked the ball over from the left. The Leverkusen defender Toprak forced in a second for his side as United's defence failed to clear in the closing stages.
