The first Heydar Aliyev Anniversary Tour will take place from 9 to 13 May 2012 in Azerbaijan. The five-day stage race is the first professional cycling event in Azerbaijan. The race will start with a team time trial on the streets of Baku and return after five days' racing to conclude with a stage in the area around the city.
After the team time trial in Baku, the peloton will head into the Caucasus Hills for the second stage. From there the riders will ride through a picturesque landscape during stages that finish in Ismayilli and Gabala. From the race’s northernmost point in Sheki, the peloton will then head back to Baku for the final stage on a hilly circuit passing the city’s most beautiful sights.
The Heydar Aliyev Anniversary Tour is a 2.2 U23 event on the UCI Continental Tour. Teams of six riders from all over the world will compete in this first professional cycling race in Azerbaijan. The Cycling Federation of Azerbaijan and the ministry of youth and sports of Azerbaijan will organize the race together with FREUNDE Eventlogistik from Germany. The complete route was planned by Albrecht Röder, whose experience in organizing cycling events includes the UCI Road World Championships in Stuttgart in 2007.
