A campaign started in Azerbaijan with a view to support Baku’s candidacy to be venue for the 2020 Olympic Games, Executive director of Baku-2020 Organizing Group Konul Nurullayeva said at a press conference today.
A nation-wide support is needed to hold the Olympic Games. "This campaign is going to get a million or more signatures in support of Baku’s bid for Olympic 2020," Nurullayeva said.
She said the most recent poll showed that majority of the Azerbaijani population supports the holding of the Olympic Games.
Chairman of the Union of Student Organizations Shahin Ismayilov added that students will also be involved in the campaign.
"Some 39 higher education institutions and tens of thousands of our members will join this campaign," he noted. The campaign will involve student volunteers.
Olympic champion Zemfira Meftahetdinova said she believes if Baku wins the right to be a venue for the 2020 Olympic Games, then the whole world will see that Azerbaijan is different from a sporting point of view and in terms of hospitality and friendliness.
Olympic champion Farid Mansurov said the Azerbaijani population wants Baku to host the Olympic Games.
