24 June 2009 [13:14] - Today.Az
Azerbaijan's laws regarding non-governmental organizations must be improved due to tasks set by the State Program on Reduction of Poverty in Azerbaijan and Sustainable Development for 2008-2015.
"Major provisions of the state program are improvement of the registration of NGOs, the mechanism for allocation of grants to NGOs and provide public with detailed information on NGOs. Improvements to legislation related to NGOs are the inevitable," President of the Council for State Support for NGOs under President Azay Guliyev said at a press conference.
He said the state program creates more opportunities for NGOs and the legal framework, which in turn will enable them to continue the work in a larger scale.
Additions and changes to the law on NGOs will be discussed at the meeting of Parliament on 30 June, Guliyev said.
"If the amendments to the law will be adopted in its present form, the NGO could face restrictions. On the other hand, we must acknowledge that the NGO laws must be improved," he said.
Guliyev said the council supports exclusion of a number of principal issues from amendments.
"That is why we will hold public discussions in relation to the additions and amendments to the law prior to parliamentary discussions," he said.
International organizations and some NGOs believe that the additions and amendments to the legislation would limit the activities of NGOs.
