A thick layer of smog rolled into Azerbaijan’s capital city, turning skyscrapers into shadows and clear air into a dust fog.

Dust torpedoed air quality in Baku and Absheron peninsula on August 23. The monitoring results showed that the amount of dust in the air is above the sanitary norm.

The ecology ministry announced that such a dusty weather in Baku and Absheron peninsula is caused by dusty air masses entering from the territory of Turkmenistan.

This isn’t the first time that dust has blanketed Baku. Southeastern winds often bring dusty air masses from Turkmenistan’s deserts.

Dusty conditions will continue over the next three days, forecasters said.

"Such meteorological conditions, dust fog will continue in the next three days,” the deputy Director of the National Environmental Monitoring Department of the Ministry Matanat Avazova told Report.

“That is, weak winds will be observed till August 26, the temperature and relative humidity will be high, which can lead to increase in dust. People with respiratory tract problems recommended to stay at home".
