A large-scale work is underway in Baku to construct an ecological park, Day.Az reported. The project is being realized upon the presidential decree.

Deputy Head of the Sabail District Abit Aliyev said that the next  stage of the "green" project is carried out in the village of  Bibi-Heybat .

"About one million trees will be planted here. In the first phase, one main and two additional reservoirs have been built to ensure the water supply. Two pumping stations have been also established," said Aliyev.

About 70,000 seedlings of such trees as Eldar pine and oleander have been already planted since early 2016.

“Early in September, we together with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources began to implement the next phase of the project; installed a new irrigation system and planted new trees. This project is long term and will contribute to environmental cleanliness of the Bibi-Heybat as well as the creation of wellness area. We’re planning to extend the boundaries of the park", he added.

Azerbaijan was ranked the 31st among 180 countries in 2016 Environmental Performance Index – ranking, evaluating how nations protect their ecosystems and human health, prepared by researchers from Yale and Columbia University.

Over the past decade, the number of protected areas, national parks and nature reserves has increased significantly in Azerbaijan, which is very helpful to prevent the deforestation.
