Theory has it that if you have properly structured you blog’s
internal links, then your blog’s homepage or a certain blog post that
you prefer, will be able to increase it’s page rank even without you
having to go through all the trouble of getting external links.
Be
forewarned though that this is a theory put forth by some SEO gurus and
there is no concrete evidence that this theory works though some swears
through their teeth that good internal linking is good for your blog’s
on-site SEO.
Now, though this theory has not been conclusively proven, it, on the
other hand has never been effectively contradicted either. In view of
this, I will give the benefit of doubt that this theory does help in
some way and rather than being sorry, I chose to practice it
religiously.
The Real Intention Of Internal Linking
The intention of internal linking was never for SEO. It is to benefit
human visitors so that when needed, they can refer to your other
articles for further understanding. Internal links also provide a
clearer navigation path for them to read your other articles.
SEO came into play later when it was discovered that if your internal
links are good and clear, search spiders too, like humans can read your
blog better.
What Is Internal Linking
Internal linking, in practice is linking your post to one another. For example, if you
have a post that has some high ranking blog’s linking to it, you would
want to share that juice with a few other posts or even your homepage.
Thus you would add a couple of links to that particular post pointing
them to other posts that you are hoping to rank. You might also point
one link to your homepage in hope that your homepage will benefit too.
Double SERPs Listings
Another benefit of good internal linking is it will help you get
double or triple listings in Search Engine Results page. Say if you have
a post that sits in the number one position, linking that post to
another and having that other linking back to that number one position
post will ensure that the other post comes in second to that top
position post in the SERPs. This, I can safely say, have been proven to
work many times over, but surprisingly, not much was written about by
most of the reputable SEO gurus.
Link Sculpting
Link sculpting or page rank sculpting, whereby the webmaster tries to
manipulate the rankings for a certain post by concentrating all the
link juice to it, is deeply frowned upon by Google and should not be
practiced at all. Matt Cutts discussed the issue about Page Rank Sculpting and why Google does not favor it about six months ago.
So What Is The Theory About Getting Good Page Ranks
The theory is, if your homepage or which ever page you want, has some
page rank, you will be able to increase that page rank with just
internal linking alone.
How The Theory Works.
Let’s take the Page X or maybe your Homepage if you prefer, has a
page rank of 2 and you have 10 links pointing out to 10 different posts
in your blog. In theory, that would mean each out going link will carry a
juice weigh of 0.2. (2 divided by 10)
Now every page or every post you published in the Net that has been
indexed by Google, will have a page juice of some kind assigned to it by
Google. I do not know how this figure came about, but it is said that
every Google page indexed by Google carries a weight of 0.12 in link
juice.
Thus when you link to that post from Page X you will be giving that
post a link juice of 0.2. Add that to it’s original weight, that post
now will have a page rank juice of 0.32.
Internal linking does not stop there. From that post, you are to link
back only once to page X and no other pages, effectively returning the
favor to page X with a pure juice weight of 0.32.
If that is done 10 times, that would mean Page X sacrificed a total
of 2 by linking out 10 times internally but in returned, got compensated
by 3.2 with the 10 incoming internal links. Thus, the increase in it’s
page Rank.
That’s the theory I have read. Whether you choose to believe or not
is not my business nor prerogative. SEO gurus will always have lots and
lots of theories for you to digest. So chew and swallow whatever you can
and spit out whatever you can’t.
Putting This Theory In Practice.
Based on this theory, many if not all SEO gurus will advise you to
link back to your Homepage at least once in every post you make with the
text you want to rank for as the anchor text. Many does that and I am
quite sure you would have read a few yourself.
The easy, quick and surest way to achieving this is to leave a
homepage link in your blog’s footer using the anchor text you want. Your
homepage will then effectively linked from every page in your blog.
Therefore if you have 500 posts, that means you will have 500 links with
your preferred keywords linking to your homepage. That would give your
blog some sort of authority for that keyword and your SERPs ranking for
that word should rise.
