Three years have passed since open and full-scale military aggression carried out by Russia against Georgia in August 2008. Unfortunately, Russia continues an aggressive policy aimed at destroying the Georgian statehood against the independence and sovereignty of the country and the citizens of Georgia on the third anniversary of the August war, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Georgia's restoration of independence, the Russian Federation consistently and purposefully fights against the independent Georgian state. In this struggle the Russian Federation uses a variety of methods, by violating the basic norms of international law, a statement said.

Military actions were launched in the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia in August 2008. Georgian troops entered Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, and later Russian troops occupied the city and drove the Georgian military back to Georgia.

Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26 and established diplomatic relations with the regions on Sept. 9, 2008.
