A meeting of the Supreme Military Council chaired by the country’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan kicked off in Turkey this morning, the Sabah newspaper reported.

Along with Erdogan, the meeting is attended by Commander-In-Chief of the Turkish Land Forces and Deputy Chief of General Staff Necdet Ozel, Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz, Deputy Chief of General Staff Aslan Guner, and other senior military officials.

The meeting will consider promoting a number of generals, admirals, and colonels, and extending the term of office of several senior officers.

The meeting’s results will be announced at a press conference on Aug. 4 with the participation of Turkish President Abdullah Gul.

Last week, Turkish General Staff Chief Gen. Isik Kosaner resigned after a meeting in private with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As the Turkish media outlets reported, Erdogan put forward an initiative to send Kosaner to retirement. In response, Koshaner resigned.

Along with Kosaner, another three Land, Naval, Air Forces generals asked for retirement, local media outlets reported.
