Turkey's national air carrier Turkish Airlines, or THY, launched flights to Basra in Iraq on Tuesday.

Basra has become the 140th overseas destination for the airline. THY flies also to Baghdad and Irbil in Iraq.

THY's CEO Temel Kotil, who appeared at a press conference to introduce company's flights to Basra, said that Iraq was a very important country for Turkey and THY.

"We have connected Basra with 139 other destinations across the world. We want Europe to know more about Basra," Kotil said.

Kotil also said that THY would add new Iraqi destinations to its network in the near future.

THY flights to Basra will take off from Istanbul three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
