Twenty tons of opium, which was seized on Feb.28, was brought to the country upon the Health Ministry’s order and is legal, Iran 's police commander, Brigadier General Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam was quoted as saying by the Iranian ISNA news agency.

He said this cargo have been brought to use for medical productions. Twenty-nine tons of opium was seized at the Imam Khomeini Tehran International Airport last week, the Mehr news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Moghaddam did not give information about remaining 9 tons of opium, about which was reported by media outlets in addition to the seized 20 tons.

The narcotic substances were bought from China in the Indian city of Mumbai, from they were delivered to Tehran on a special plane upon the order of an Iranian private pharmaceutical company.

Payment for goods was made through an Iranian bank. According the report, the criminal case is under investigation.

According to unofficial information, the opium was brought into the country under the order of the Health Ministry. The drugs were intended for the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals.
