The anti-government demonstrations in Arab countries that have led to the downfall of the ruling regimes in Tunisia and Egypt may also spread to Turkey, Mahir Kaynak, a former Turkish intelligence analyst, believes.

"We may see a similar situation in Turkey, particularly in the central and eastern areas of the country," Kaynak told Trend.

The country's economically backward eastern regions are inhabited mainly by Kurds, some of whom are members of the radical separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

However, according to Kaynak, recent developments in Arab countries will have a positive impact on Turkey's position in the region.

"These events will have a positive impact on Turkey's position and will not harm the country, "he said.

A wave of popular discontent has hit many countries in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen and Libya since early 2011. It has resulted in riots and protests against the existing regimes in these countries. At present, a fierce struggle between the population and the authorities is continuing in Libya, where, according to recent data, 2,000 people were killed and 4,000 were injured.

Kaynak also believes that great protest actions can also hit Iraq, Syria and Iran.
