Turkey's Foreign Ministry on Monday said the country was willing to win a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council in the shortest possible time as its term of non-permanent membership for 2009-2010 expired as of December 31, 2010.

The ministry said in a statement posted on its website that Turkey exerted efforts on many regional, bilateral and multi-lateral platforms in a bid to contribute to international peace and stability.

The ministry said Turkey won the non-permanent seat for the first time in 50 years with the support of 151 countries which marked over a three-fourths majority of the UN members, which the ministry said was a sign of the trust vested in Turkey by countries from different parts of the world with varying socio-economic conditions.

During its term, Turkey twice led the presidency of the Council in June 2009 and in September 2010. The country also chaired several committees.
