Georgia will begin issuing biometric passports on Apr.15, Georgian Civil Registry Chairman and Deputy Justice Minister Giorgi Vashadze said.

"Our citizens may appeal and obtain the passport from Apr.15," he said. "The presence of a biometric passport provides a simplified migration to EU countries. Citizens with such passports will receive visas for a maximum period of 10 days, which will cost 35 euros."

The biometric passport will be embedded electronic chip with information and a photo identity and fingerprints.

The information that will be recorded in the specified passport will be protected. The document will have a 99% guarantee from the state that it will not be falsified.

Currently, biometric passports are used in EU, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Egypt and Kazakhstan.

Georgia will have three centers for the production of biometric passports - in Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi.

Biometric passports are issued for a period of 10 years and their cost is 100 lari (1.74 lari is $1).
