Iran has been re-elected as the vice-chair of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Iran's ambassador to the Netherlands and the permanent representative to the organization, Kazem Gharibabadi, has been re-appointed as OPCW vice-chair at the meeting of Asian members of the group held in the headquarters of the organization in the Hague and will be introduced to the next meeting of the council scheduled for April 2010.
Based in The Hague, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is the implementation body of the Chemical Weapons Organization (CWC or Convention).
The OPCW is given the mandate to achieve the object and purpose of the Convention, to ensure the implementation of its provisions, including those for international verification of compliance with it, and to provide a forum for consultation and cooperation among States Parties.
The Executive Council, the executive organ of the Organization, consists of 41 members who are elected by the Conference of States Parties for a term of two years.
It is required to carry out all functions and powers entrusted to it by the Convention, as well as any functions delegated to it by the Conference.
