Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey needed to face up to its problems in order to solve them.

"Turkey can solve its issues by only showing the courage to engage them head on. And that is everyone's responsibility including politicians, intellectuals, artists, media members and opinion leaders," Erdogan told Friday a televised address to the nation.

The premier said Turkey owed its growing strength and prosperity to its democracy as well as stability and confidence, saying the transformation of the country only made it more powerful.

"It is obvious that we still have a long distance to go and problems to solve. And that is something we can only achieve by getting together, and with the contributions from all segments of our society in a joint mood and excitement. We value highly social peace, stability, our unity as well as our friendship and brotherhood," Erdogan said.
