The demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) has increased in the world, which is resulting in many LNG supplier countries’ increasing their production. Qatar, the world’s main LNG exporter, is undoubtedly among these countries.

Qatar plans to increase production of LNG to 110 million tons by 2024, the country’s Energy Minister Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sad said at the plenary session during the Russian Energy Week, TASS reported.

"Initially, we thought we could increase production to 77 million tons, but then we realized that we could easily reach the level of 110 million tons [of LNG] by 2024," he said.

The Russian Energy Week international forum is being held in Moscow in the Manezh Central exhibition hall from October 3 to 6. The forum is attended by heads of major international energy companies, leading world experts and media representatives.

Gas Strategies, a management consultancy focused on the global gas and LNG industry, has recently noted in its report that successful opening up of new LNG markets has increased the number of LNG importing countries from 18 in 2008 to 42 today.

Massimo Di-Odoardo, Vice President of Global Gas and LNG Research, in turn, believes Global demand for LNG is set to outstrip supply. He noted that China and Europe will become the major importers of LNG.

Presently, the largest LNG exporters are Qatar, Australia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Indonesia, Algeria, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, Oman, and Papua New Guinea, while the main importers include Asian countries – Japan, China, South Korea, India and Taiwan.
