Iran’s President Hasan Rouhani promised not to allow the return of Western sanctions in case of his victory in the forthcoming presidential elections.

The current administration has always tried to protect the rights of the Iranian people, Rouhani, who is running for a second term, said.

"Together we made efforts to lift sanctions, and we succeeded," he stressed, adding that the country "can oppose the enemy only through cooperation and interaction with regional states."

Rouhani called on the Iranians to actively participate in the voting process in the upcoming elections, saying that if the people want the problems to be solved, they should take part in the voting.

Ebrahim Raeisi, custodian of Imam Reza (AS) holy shrine, former minister of culture and Islamic guidance Mostafa Mirsalim and former minister of physical education Mostafa Hashemi Taba, as well as President Hassan Rouhani are the four candidates to run for presidency in the forthcoming presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation are the main winners of the upcoming presidential election, no matter who becomes president.

Khamenei, addressing a meeting with a group of Iranians ahead of the presidential election, said the Islamic Republic is preparing for election in peace and security, while regional countries suffer insecurity.

“This peaceful and calm environment is invaluable,” Khamenei said, adding that discipline and people's commitment to abide by the law before the election, on the day of the election and after the election, is important.

The voting date for the 12th presidential and 5th city and council elections is May 19.

To win, the candidate must score more than 50 percent of the vote. If none of the applicants succeeds in enlisting the support of such a number of voters, a second round of voting will be held, in which two leaders of the first round will participate.
