The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) has repeatedly violated its obligations during the implementation of the contract for the supply of Turkmen gas to Iran, the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan said in a message.

“Despite the fact that the take or pay principle is one of the main conditions of the contract, the NIGC hasn’t taken large volumes of the Turkmen gas for several years,” the message said. “At the same time, the company didn’t pay any financial compensation to Turkmenistan.”

In addition, the information posted by the NIGC on its website about the alleged violation of the contract by the Turkmengaz State Concern in terms of the quality and the volume of gas supplied to Iran, doesn’t correspond to reality, said the message.

“We consider this tendentious and biased information posted by the NIGC as an attempt to confuse everybody regarding the issue related to the repayment of the company’s debt to the Turkmen side,” the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in its message.

The ministry also points out that the unilateral statements made by the NIGC about many hours of fruitless negotiations are unfounded and emotional.

“In this regard, it should be emphasized that meetings, consultations and negotiations with representatives of Iran’s Oil Ministry and the NIGC are regularly held namely at the initiative of the Turkmen side,” said the message.

In this process, the Turkmen side repeatedly made concrete proposals aimed not only at addressing the emerging issues related to gas supply according to the long-term contract, but also related to the expansion of the Turkmen-Iranian cooperation in the gas sphere.

“Thanks to such constructive approach of the Turkmen side, it was possible to achieve results on topical issues of the gas partnership between Turkmenistan and Iran,” the Turkmen Foreign Ministry added.

Turkmenistan supplies natural gas to Iran since 1997, after commissioning of the gas pipeline from its western Korpeje field to the Iranian city of Kordkuy.
