23 February 2013 [14:10] - Today.Az
The Ahvaz International Airport located in the southwestern province of Khuzestan will be relocated within the next five years following the discovery of an oilfield near the airport, ISNA quoted Director of the Iranian Airports Company Mohammed Rasoulinejad as saying.
In December 2012, an oilfield was discovered in the vicinity of the airport's runway.
"The government has approved the relocation of the airport," Rasoulinejad said, adding that the new airport will be built 15 kilometers (9 miles) away from the city.
Rasoulinejad said that the airport is among "the country's busiest" with some 30 flights per day, adding that relocating it would also enable its much-needed expansion.
