If the number of Syrian refugees in Turkey exceeds 100,000 people, Ankara will create a safety zone within the Syrian border, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Monday, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.
"To date, there are 65,000 Syrian refugees in Turkey. Therefore, we are working on the possible establishment of a safety zone in Syria," Davutoglu said.
With regard to some countries' accusations that Turkey supports the opposition members in Syria, Davutoglu said that Turkey could not remain aloof from the developments.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for about 17 months. According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria has exceeded 17,000 people. About 230,000 people became refugees. About three million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say that they oppose the well-armed militants.
