EU does not recognize elections in region of South Ossetia in Georgia as legitimate, said press-service of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Monday.
"European Union does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework within which these elections have taken place" - said in the statement.
"The High Representative reiterates her support to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as recognised by international law. The High Representative would in this context like to emphasize the importance of the Geneva International Discussions in ensuring the security and stability in the region", the document says.
Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the Tskhinvali city and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as the occupied territories.
