Four Azerbaijanis, two of who are Azerbaijani citizens, as well as an Udi were evacuated from Kazakh Zhanaozen city where riots took place last week and taken to Aktau, the Azerbaijani Consul-General in Aktau Rashad Mammadov reported on Monday.
Ogtay Khudiyev and Salam Suleymanov are Azerbaijani citizens and were conducting business in one of the malls in Zhanaozen. On Friday mass riots took place in the Kazakh oil town Zhanaozen in the Mangistau region, killing 14 and injuring about 90.
Now, the situation in the city is relatively stable, Mr Mammadov said. Azerbaijani Consulate General in Aktau has taken a number of urgent and preventive measures in connection with the riots. He is ready to provide assistance to compatriots and fellow citizens, Mr Mammadov said.
About 15, 000 Azerbaijanis reside in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan. Some 1700 of them are permanent whilst about 2000 are temporary. About 8000 Azerbaijanis residing there are Kazakh citizens, the others, Georgian citizens. Some 50 Azerbaijanis are residing in Zhanaozen, 25 of which are Azerbaijani citizens. No fellow citizen affected by the riots has been named.
