Azerbaijani commissioner for human rights (Ombudsperson) Elmira Suleymanova has met with UNICEF Deputy Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and CIS, Kirsi Madi. The Azerbaijani ombudsperson briefed the UNICEF`s official on the activity of the Office and underscored existence of close relations with the UNICEF`s Baku office.

Suleymanova also stressed that Azerbaijan ratified a number of international conventions, as well as international legal documents outlining children`s rights. Taking into account that Azerbaijan signed Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, the ombudsperson suggested adopting a Law of Azerbaijan Republic on Corporal Punishment of Children.

Suleymanova also spoke of the activity of four regional offices of Azerbaijani Ombudsman`s Office. She stressed the importance for expanding the activity of 26 Children`s Resource Centers which had been established with the support of UNICEF.

Speaking in the meeting, Kirsi Madi highly praised the Azerbaijani ombudsperson`s activity and strategy towards human rights, including children`s rights.
