09 April 2009 [09:47] - Today.Az
Day.Az interview with famous Ukrainian political scientist Oles Doniy.

- As is known, Ukrainian President will pay a visit to Azerbaijan on April 9-10. Can you assess the current state of the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian relations in this regards?

- The potential of the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian relations is great and it exceeds the level of cooperation between our countries today. And I consider that Ukraine should display more initiative for expansion of cooperation between our countries. In particular, cooperation between Azerbaijan and Ukraine could have deepened in the framework of energy security.

- Can the complex internal political situation in Ukraine influence the dynamics of the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian relations?

- It is obvious that the main direction of external policy of Ukraine is Euroatlantic integration and this is supported by all leading political powers of the country. Merely someone supports more radical positions and others are moderate. In particular, the opponents of working powers, the party of regions, state the need for Ukraine's EU accession.

If so, the integration with the European system of energy security is still important for Ukraine, which means that the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian relations need deepening regardless of political conjuncture.

- How can you explain the fact that Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko who visited Azerbaijan more than once, has never paid a visit to Armenia as a leader of your country?

- For several reasons. First of all, the prospects of the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian relations are wide, Second, the existing level of Azerbaijani-Ukrainian relations is much higher than the level of the Armenian-Ukrainian relations. This, Armenia is a strategic ally of Russia. Four, a part of Azerbaijani territory is still under occupation, while the problem of territorial claims by the neighbor states is now close to Ukraine.
