08 April 2009 [15:04] - Today.Az
US president's visit to Turkey should be considered in two directions, global direction is US intention to put pressure on the Middle East solution via Turkey, as only Turkey and Egypt today can influence the situation in the Gaza strip, said political scientist Ogtay Sadikhzade.
Also he said the US plans to influence Iran, especially its nuclear programme via Turkey.
"Regional direction is to use Turkey as a diplomatic means, influencing the possible recognition or non-recognition of the so-called "Armenian genocide: via it and also to influence the position of official Ankara towards Armenia and thus to reduce to minimum or withdraw Armenia completely from under Russia's influence. In this issue Ankara has recently received a response from Azerbaijan in the face of statements of respected president Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov", said the political scientist.
According to him, after the statements of President Ilham Aliyev, Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan started to disavow there previous positions on Armenia and again bind improvement of relations with Armenia, opening of borders with it to the fair resolution of the Karabakh conflict in the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
"For this purpose a group of Turkish deputies will visit Azerbaijan and official Ankara via controlled mass medias will tell the Azerbaijani and Turkish public that it always informed official Baku about talks with Armenia", said Sadikhzade.
According to him, the main threat for Azerbaijan is the fact that the initial draft agreement between Turkey and Armenia has the only paragraph on Nagorno Karabakh, which is too vague.
"Moreover, it does not mention the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan or our national interests, which is a direct violation of international law, article 3 and 9 of the OSCE charter. Considering that it is early to say that there is no threat of opening of borders between Turkey and Armenia".
He considers that such behavior of the Turkish leadership is because Abdullah Gul and Recep Tayyip Erdogan fulfill definite diplomatic maneuvres.
"It is clear that EU and US demand from them to open borders with Armenia and not much is left to April 24, the day when Barack Obama might pronounce or not pronounce the word "genocide", while Turkey is concerned it very much".
Sadikhzade noted that Turkey fears to lose Azerbaijan as the trade turnover between Turkey and Armenia can not be compared with losses that can be caused to the Turkish economy and energy in the result of suspension of Azerbaijani gas supplies and deterioration of relations with Azerbaijan.
"Azerbaijan is a reliable energy and strategic partner of most states, including Turkey, while Turkey's position is two-faced and Gul's recent statements allow to state that the leadership of this country has not formed a clear policy on most decisive issues", concluded the political scientist.
