Day.Az interview with consul general for Azerbaijan in Los Angeles Elin Suleymanov.
- How did the people in the United States reacted on the events in South Ossetia and further actions of Russia in Georgia?
- In the threshold of party sessions in the United States the American public is mostly focused on internal issues. Moreover, on the whole, the clashes between Georgia and Russia have been unexpected for US public, which is unfamiliar with details of the situation in the Caucasus.
Therefore, the point is now the intention to realize what happens between the two neighbor countries in our region. The delayed reaction of official Washington was also surprising. It seems that escalation of tensions was also a surprise for the White House as well.
- How do candidates for presidency assess these events?
- The reaction of senator McCain seems tougher than the announcements of Barak Obama, which reflects the more confrontational outlook of McCain on the relations with Russia. At the same time, the potential destabilization in the region creates deep concerns among the politicians of both parties in the United States.
- How does the US establishment see the future of Russian-American relations?
- It is too early to speak of further development of relations between Moscow and Washington. Yet it is clear that the recent events around Georgia will influence both the bilateral Russian-American relations and Russia's relations with the entire West.
- What will be the future of the whole South Caucasus region following the recent events in Georgia, in your opinion?
- I would abstain from predicting the future of our region. At the same time, the events in Georgia do not promote strengthening of regional stability. Though, the recognition of the territorial integrity of Georgia is an important element for normalization of the situation.
- Is there a threat of a new cold war between the United States and Russia?
- I hope there will not be a new cold war between them. It does not serve the interests of both sides and our region.
