In the framework of the seventh session, the UN Board of Human Rights adopted a draft resolution on the problem of people missing in the result of armed conflicts, initiated by the delegation of Azerbaijan.

The due announcement was made by ambassador Elchin Amirbekov, Azerbaijani ambassador to Switzerland, permanent representative of our country under the UN Department in Geneva.

The draft resolution was adopted by the whole Council unanimously. At the same time 38 UN member-states, representing all geographical regional groups of the organization, joined the document as co-sponsors.

In his speech ambassador Amirbekov noted that the main purpose of the draft, adopted through a consensus, was to draw the attention of the world society via the Board of Human Rights to urgent problems of missing people, the need to undertake timely, coordinated, consistent and effective efforts of the whole world society, primarily, the countries, participating in armed conflicts on the resolution of numerous problems of missing people, as well as their family members.

The draft calls on the countries participating in the armed conflicts to cooperate with the International Committee of the Red Cross in defining the fate of the missing people and welcomes the due activity of the commissions and work groups on the national level.

To make the draft resolution more operative, a decision was adopted by initiative of the Azerbaijani delegation to hold open discussions in the framework of the Board of Human Rights during its September session on missing people with participation of the countries, international organizations and national institutes of human rights, by results of which the UN Supreme Commissioner of Human Rights will prepare a resume.

It is also planned that the Board of Human Rights will appeal to the newly elected Consultative Committee of the Board of Human Rights with a request to prepare a research work on the experience in addressing the problem of missing people. The draft resolution also addresses to the UN Secretary General with a request to prepare a comprehensive report on the execution of the said resolution until March of the next year.
