US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse submitted a report issued by the State Department on the Human Rights in Azerbaijan to the media and civil society representatives.

According to APA, the ambassador said Azerbaijan had already made its strategic choice. “Azerbaijan’s strategic choice is the freedom, democracy and integration into the Euro-Atlantic space. I hope this report will be accepted as a friendly constructive criticism”.

Ambassador has resumed the results of 2007 and said there was no significant progress in the sphere of Human Rights in Azerbaijan last year.

“The most concerning issue is the freedom of speech. Some journalists are still in prison. 2008 is a year of elections in Azerbaijan, so that freedom of meeting is very important issue in the country. People living in the democratic country should have a right of freedom of assembly”.

The ambassador has also underlined releasing of a number of journalists from prison and housing of displaced persons, as well as authorization of ANS TV broadcasting as the positive points of Human Rights protection for last year.
