The key to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict is neither in Yerevan nor in Baku, European Parliament member George Schopflin said.

He said that Russia is to be held responsible for the occupation of Azerbaijani lands and the situation in the region.

"This is a tragedy, but should also be regarded as a political reality. The problem should be regarded from strategic aspect," he said.

Schopflin said Armenia and Azerbaijan should not act as victims. He said the process of expansion of European Union face resistance and we should mention former members of EU.

"Turkey's implementing EU commitments is very important. Expansion of European Union is at the same time expansion of people's democracy," he said.

Noting that Azerbaijan has much to do Schopflin said the steps Azerbaijan will take are of great interest.

"Azerbaijan is a secular country the population of which is mainly Muslims. There are difficulties. Its communist past sometimes creates problems," he said.

The member of European Parliament considers that Azerbaijan's tourism can be very attractive for Europe. The country has rich potential in this sphere.

"Azerbaijan will have the chance to be recognized in the European Union. Special attention should be paid to flights connecting Baku with Vienna and Budapest," he said.

Schopflin stated that Azerbaijan is European country and underlined that much depends on the country itself. APA
