Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay called Azerbaijani tragedy of January 20, 1990, a crime committed by the Soviet Army.

Mr.Mackay sent a letter to the Federation of Azerbaijani Societies of Canada president Akbar Majidov on the January 20 tragedy. The Minister publicized Canadian government's position regarding the January 20 events. He said historical notes on the January 20 show that armless civilians were massacred by security forces of former Soviet Union.

"These events are one of the black pages of Azerbaijani history. The victims of the January 20 event, who demonstrated heroism for the independence of the country, should not be forgotten," he said.

Coordination Center of Turkish World Diaspora Organizations established on the initiative of the Federation of Azerbaijani Societies of Canada published letters addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper for political assessment of the January 20 tragedy and started a large-scale campaign in this direction in early January, 2007.
