Chairman of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan Ramiz Rzayev in the frame of his working visit to Strasbourg has met with the Chairman of the European Court for Human Rights Mr Jean-Paul Costa.

In meeting, Mr. Rzayev informed on the ongoing judicial-legal reforms in the Republic, election of judges by test to provide transparency in the judicial system and supremacy of law. Noting that the Constitution of Republic has declared maintenance of human rights as the highest goal of state, Mr. Rzayev said appropriate Decrees of the country's President on improvement and modernization of judicial-legal system. The country after becoming a full member of the Council of Europe, in short time has acceded to many conventions, including the Convention "On protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms."

Mr. Jean-Paul Costa stressed necessity of further development of bilateral ties between the European Court of Human Rights and Supreme Court of Azerbaijan.

Chairman of the Supreme Court has also taken part at the seminar dedicated to ceremony of opening of the Year of European Convention on human Rights, international Law, the Constitutional Law and Court.

At the ceremony, new Chairman of the European Court of Human Rights Jean-Paul Costa has made a report on results of 2006. AzerTAg
