"I did not have chance to get acquainted with Elmar Huseynov. But as far as I know, he was a patriot, the journalist who knew how the freedom of speech was important, a principal person who tried to better the situation of the state," Barry F. Lowenkron, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor told the journalists.

He said that the attacks to the person like Elmar Huseynov should be treated as the attack to the democracy. "The one who assassinated Elmar Huseynov had a goal to make not only Elmar Huseynov silent, but also other journalists too and to impose censorship on them. But the murderer should not achieve their goal," he said, APA reports.

Lowenkron stated that Azerbaijan undertook some commitments on freedom of media. "I call for Azerbaijani government to bring the person bearing responsibility for Elmar Huseynov's assassination to court. The need for democracy and human rights arose from the will to live free and honorable, and also personal self-control and courage of the person like Elmar Huseynov. My express U.S government and U.S people's condolence to Elmar Huseynov's family, friends, colleagues and Azerbaijani people," he said.
