Today.Az » Politics » Did you want "Azerbaijan next"? Choke on it! - A reminder to the Armenian revanchists

With the prospect of ending the war in Ukraine looming on the horizon, Armenian revanchist and Russian chauvinist publications have renewed hopes that "Azerbaijan is next." These hopes are sometimes visited by revanchist circles in Armenia, and they try to build propaganda against the current authorities on such narratives. The pre-election season in Armenia is very hot, and no arguments will hurt if it is necessary to gloss over the obvious advantages of Nikol Pashinyan's peaceful steps.

The revanchists do not expect Armenia to strengthen, as they understand that no matter how it strengthens, it will not be able to catch up with its neighbor. This is a completely meaningless race, so the revanchist circles do not promise their electorate that Armenia will get back on its feet and return everything. They promise the Armenians that, having finished dealing with Ukraine, Russia will come and take Karabakh away from Azerbaijan, and they will not have long to wait. And, as the Armenians are convinced, it would have happened a long time ago if Moscow had not been busy on the Ukrainian front. Would the Russian peacekeepers have left voluntarily? - They exclaim. Never. In five years, a military base would have already been established in Karabakh and many other things would be pleasant for Armenian ambitions.

And in order to make the Russian side feel guilty, various experts on various talk shows are trying to prove that Azerbaijan actually did not win anything after the 44-day war, but all its victories were achieved thanks to Russia. And if she wanted to, she could recognize the separatist "referendum" right now and denounce all the treaties of the 20s of the last century, returning Karabakh, Nakhchivan, and everything else for which the nationalists have appetites to the Armenians. The revanchist tribe really does not understand why Moscow has not done all this yet, despite not having the best relations with Baku. During the period of escalation, the Armenians froze in anticipation of changes. It would seem that Russia should have "punished" Azerbaijan not even for the sake of the Armenians, but for the sake of Russian interests themselves. And what do you think, what is the answer to this question found by the most gifted? In their opinion, there simply aren't any real Russians left in Russia, otherwise it wouldn't have tolerated it...

Similar thoughts are voiced by some Russian experts. Surely, everyone has already heard Alexei Venediktov's cheerful statements to the Armenian media that the conflict is not over and everything is still ahead. The well-known expert seemed to have come to Yerevan to convey to Armenians through local media that as soon as Russia has a resource, pleasant surprises await them. In any case, that's how it was understood on the Armenian side. After the Victory Day parade, opposition media rushed to Russian experts for comments on the "European demarche." Let's explain: the diplomats of most European countries did not accept the invitation to the parade, and this caused excitement in revanchist circles. Nikolai Topornin, director of the Center for European Information, replied that yes, they did not come, but this does not mean anything, since Baku has always cared what Europe thinks. Did Macron want to recognize Karabakh? Well, he didn't admit it. So he didn't really want to. When they really want to, they impose sanctions and all that stuff.

Speaking of sanctions, France has tripled its purchases of Azerbaijani oil since the beginning of the year. That's true, by the way.

The opinion that Azerbaijan does not care what the West or the east thinks about it is not entirely accurate. Azerbaijan cares. He wants his realities to be perceived for what they are, and not viewed through the prism of someone else's geopolitical interests. Unfortunately, most of the time it remains only our wish. And this, of course, upsets us. So Azerbaijan does care, but it does not perceive other people's opinion as a guide to action and does not adjust its policy in accordance with it. The fact that the ambassadors of European countries refused to attend the parade should be taken philosophically. That's how they perceive it in Baku. According to the Armenian media, this demarche will not affect bilateral relations in any way, just as all the previous statements from European capitals that we heard after the war did not. The above fact about the import of Azerbaijani oil speaks for itself.

To be honest, the online discussions that have arisen in connection with the news about Ukraine are hilarious. The revanchist chatter, multiplied by the inextinguishable megalomania and numerous complexes of Armenian nationalists, looks funny. Today's fuss is an echo of the anti-Azerbaijani campaign in the Russian media that took place several months ago. The campaign has stopped, but its echoes still resound in the ears of the Armenian revanchists, who had high hopes for it.

The opposition opposing Nikol Pashinyan bases its propaganda on the Russian factor. The diaspora is working on the western "front", but this does not have much effect in conditions when official Yerevan has abandoned the policy of slander and whining and constantly focuses on the advent of the era of peace. This is a very important nuance. For example, Macron cannot raise the issue of the return of Armenians to Karabakh if the Armenian Prime Minister declares that it is harmful to the Armenian statehood. The hysteria of separatists and revanchists cannot serve as a basis for official statements by Paris. I think Armenia's allies are even happy about this turnaround, because they can finally relax in their relations with Azerbaijan, which they need much more.

The same is the case with the hopes of bringing the Karabakh issue back on the agenda through Moscow's hands. I remember that during the period of the aggravation of relations, there were many aggressive calls in the Russian media space. They did not give anything to the revanchists, except for temporary moral satisfaction. Today, zealous propaganda against Azerbaijan is no longer so widespread and is limited to a small number of publications. For example, recently Novaya Gazeta published a huge article about how Azerbaijan is "destroying monuments and culture" and "reformatting the history" of the Karabakh region. The article is full of details and photographic materials, crammed into it everything that has accumulated, so to speak. Interestingly, at the same time, a cloying article published by Izvestia a few years before the war began to be quoted in social networks, telling about life in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Armenian bloggers especially like the phrases from the article belonging to the fraudster Gurgen Martirosyan, who called himself "Archbishop of Artsakh" Pargev during the occupation period. This Pargev, or whatever his name is, said that it was the Armenians who invited the Russians to the Caucasus, and Karabakh became part of Russia even before Armenia.

Why did these mothballed quotes come up? It seems to separate the interests of the separatists from the interests of the current Armenian authorities and signal to the Russian side that Karabakh Armenians are not interested in Yerevan's opinion. Even Pop Pargev said that Karabakh joined Russia before Armenia. And even though Pashinyan "sold out" to the Americans, the separatists continue to rely on their older brother.

All this can be attributed to the propaganda campaign fever. The revanchists are trying very hard to win the hearts of the Armenian society, pointing out that the light at the end of the tunnel is not where Nikol Pashinyan is leading the country, but in a completely different direction. Someone does. And for those who believe in the revanchists, let's just say that moths also fly to every light bulb. Everyone knows how it ends in wildlife.
