"The US State Department's annual report fully confirms that Nagorno Karabakh and surrounding Azerbaijani districts are occupied by Armenia," said the deputy chairman of the Milli Majlis commission on national security and defense, Aydin Mirzazada.

Mirzazada has told AssA-Irada that the report issued last week also describes the real situation with regard to the Karabakh conflict, therefore, it would be wrong to say that Washington's position is pro-Azerbaijan. He said the report should also be seen as an indication of Azerbaijan's diplomatic success.

"This is the result of the work the government has been doing," the MP said and added that the report would give a further boost to Azerbaijan's position in the negotiating process.

At the same time, Mirzazada did not rule out that the release of an impartial report was only a tactical move. He said some aspects of the report, most notably those pertaining to human rights, elections and situation in prisons, were wide of the mark.

The MP added that the US State Department may have described the Karabakh conflict objectively only to balance things.

The US government indicated in its report that the outbreaks of fighting with Armenia occurred with increasing frequency, killing 24 civilians and combatants in 2005, while Nagorno Karabakh turned into an uncontrolled area over the past year. It also included a number of critical remarks on the situation in the area of human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan.
