President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the delegation of the American Jewish Distribution Committee led by its Chair Mrs. Ellen Heller, March 28.
The President expressed hope this visit would help the Committee members to get closely acquainted with Azerbaijan.
Speaking of the progress the country has achieved over the past years, the Head of State underlined it was a result of successfully implemented political, economic and social reforms. Noting his country attaches a great importance to relations with international organizations, President Ilham Aliyev said the public in Azerbaijan was well-informed of the American Jewish Distribution Committee, its history and rich traditions. The Azerbaijani leader stressed as well that all the religious confessions existing in Azerbaijan have equal conditions, and that the religious and ethnic tolerance is one of the country’s most important historical achievements.
Chair of the American Jewish Distribution Committee Mrs. Ellen Heller noted she had been impressed by the processes taking place in Azerbaijan. She expressed deep satisfaction with the high level of tolerance, and the lack - unlike some other countries - of antisemitism in Azerbaijan, especially considering it is a Muslim country.
Mrs. Heller described the existing tolerance, and good level of relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims as a symbol of democratic development in Azerbaijan.
The guest also expressed satisfaction with conditions created Azerbaijan for women’s active involvement in the country’s socio-political life.
