Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry refuted Armenian media reports about alleged death of an Azerbaijani serviceman.

Armenian media outlets earlier stated that Azerbaijani soldier Hasan Nagiyev was allegedly killed by an Armenian sniper in the Aghdam direction on the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops on July 2.

The Defense Ministry informed that Hasan Nagiyev served on active duty in the Azerbaijani armed forces and in January 2017 was transferred to the reserve. Currently, he lives in Shamkir region of Azerbaijan.

“Sharing unverified and false information serves the interests of Armenia and aims to damage the credibility of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces,” the ministry added.

Meanwhile, Armenia continues to violate the ceasefire on the frontline. Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on July 11 that over the past 24 hours, Armenia’s armed forces have 133 times violated the ceasefire along the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.

The Armenians shelled the Azerbaijani army positions near the state border in the Agstafa, Gazakh, Tovuz and Gadabay regions, as well as the Azerbaijani positions along the Nagorno-Karabakh frontline.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia still controls fifth part of Azerbaijan's territory and rejects implementing four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.
