GUAM does everything in its power to mobilise support of the international community in favour of the position of member states. This is based on unconditional and full implementation of norms and principles of international law in addressing protracted conflicts.
This statement was made by GUAM Secretary General Valery Chechelashvili at a press conference on the results of the fifth session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) held in Baku.
According to him, all these conflicts have their own format, based on which the search for their peaceful settlement is undertaken.
"We hope that all parties intensify their efforts aimed at finding appropriate solutions under existing mechanisms," he said.
According to GUAM Secretary General Valery Chechelashvili, the organisation has a well-defined platform for settlement of these conflicts.
"This is down to a special declaration from May 23, 2006 adopted by the heads of state in the framework of the Kiev summit. I would say that not only did it not lost its relevance, but rather acquired it in connection with the situation in international relations since then," Chechelashvili said.
The secretary general also spoke on the UN General Assembly draft resolution, the need for adoption of which is expressed in New York by the members of organisation. This is a draft resolution on "The protracted conflicts in GUAM area and their implications for international peace and security".
"This is a very complicated job requiring patient explanation of our position to all our partners, and I think given the study of conflicts of, say, Azerbaijan and Georgia, by national delegations, the possibility of us receiving the decisive majority of votes on this resolution at the UN General Assembly is very high. However not only the decisive majority, but the vast majority of countries, given the support of all the major players, "he said.
At the meeting, the GUAM chairmanship was taken over by Georgia from Azerbaijan. GUAM was established by the post-Soviet countries in 1997 during the EU presidential summit in Strasbourg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organisation, and left four years later. A decision was made to rename GUAM as an international organisation entitled 'Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM', at the body's first summit in Kiev in 2006.
