Azerbaijan expects Georgia's official invitation to continue the
negotiations towards the delimitation of borders with Georgia, chairman
of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Land and Cartography Garib
Mammadov told media today.
He said the negotiations were conducted at the level of experts to
delimitate the borders. At present an official invitation is expected
from the Georgian side to reach an agreement on this issue.
Mammadov said that Azerbaijan and Georgia have no disputable issues on the delimitation of borders.
"Some claims were made during the first years of independence, but they were resolved," he said.
Georgia borders with seven Azerbaijani regions - Gazakh, Agstafa,
Tovuz, Samukh, Gakh, Balakan and Zagatala stretching 480 kilometres. The
parties have so far agreed 65 per cent of the state border line.
The unresolved issue of the delimitation and demarcation of the
Georgian-Azerbaijani border affects the fate of one of the sought after
sightseeing areas of the South Caucasus, the David Gareji monastery
complex.
The complex of David Gareji cave monasteries is located 60 km
south-east of Tbilisi. St. David's monastery is located on the northern
slope of the mountain and dividing Georgia and Azerbaijan is the main
monastery.
