The Azerbaijani government provides aid to 1 million refugees and IDPs displaced from their lands as a result of occupation of 20 percent of country's territories by Armenia.
On 12 November, at Milli Majlis plenary session Ali Hasanov, vice premier and chair of the State Committee for Refugee Affairs, said that refugees and IDPs were rendered assistance for $2.9 bn thus far.
"Nearly $750 million of this amount were financed by international organizations, $850 million by the State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) and $1.3 bn by country’s state budget,” Hasanov said.
He also added that 1.1 million sq m of housing was constructed for 62,000 refugee and IDP families via the SOFAZ financing alone.
“Expenditures per refugee and IDP in Azerbaijan total $778 on average that almost doubles the indicator in other countries facing the same problem. In other countries such expenditures do not usually exceed $400,” Hasanov said.
