COP29 is set to be a pivotal moment in the global climate fight, as emphasized by Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Azernews reports, citing his statement on the 2024 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) report.

Steele stressed the importance of arriving in Baku ready to translate the commitments made in the UAE Consensus at COP28—such as tripling renewable energy, achieving global adaptation goals, and phasing out fossil fuels—into actionable results that protect communities and livelihoods worldwide.

“COP29 must be an enabling COP,” he declared, urging for concrete and ambitious outcomes in climate finance that address the needs of developing countries. He underscored that such support is essential for safeguarding both local economies and the global economy from the increasingly severe impacts of climate change.

Reflecting on the previous generation of NDCs, which sparked significant progress, Stiell asserted that the new NDCs due next year must provide a clear roadmap for scaling up renewable energy, enhancing adaptation efforts, and accelerating the transition to low-carbon economies.

As the world approaches COP29, the need for decisive action has never been more urgent. This summit must serve as a turning point in the fight against climate change, driving commitments that lead to meaningful progress and lasting impact.
